Case History # 16

SIC 3621 - Electrical Generation/Portable Load Testing

Problem:

A load bank tester for mobile generators is used to test the electrical output by creating different resistant loads and reading the generator output at different voltage settings. Traditional tester designs had their shortcomings, resulting in failure to withstand application conditions.

Solution:

To overcome the shortcomings of traditional designs, a new tester was developed with the following objectives:
  • Replace open coil type heaters
  • Lower cost
  • Enable quick change of each heater
  • Tighten tolerance on wattage, ±2-1/2 percent
  • Stabilize at voltage and wattage in five minutes or less
The Watlow tubular element offered performance characteristics not possible with open resistance coil designs. Their comparisons included:
FeaturesOpen Coil Tubular
3-G Shock TestFailedPassed
CostInexpensiveCompetitive
Easy Change OutFailedPassed
Tight Tolerance On WattagePassedPassed
Stabilize At Voltage and WattagePassedPassed

Value Added:

Watlow provided a custom thermal solution and application expertise.
the main history of the generator will be lye on flamings right hand rules
